Soli Deo Gloria is a trio of words you will find across my website, peeking out of corners (or shoved right in your face). It has a powerful meaning, both to me personally, but much more importantly, to the Kingdom of the Lord. Although it might not seem so at first, it is incredibly relevant to what I set out to do in each piece of art I create.
The History
Soli Deo Gloria is a Latin phrase that means "To God alone be the glory." These words have a rich history within the Christian faith and church history. In the early 1500's a hammer shook the foundations of the Catholic church. This hammer was held by Martin Luther, as he nailed the 95 theses to the door of the Wittenburg Church in Germany. These now famous theses outlined the ninety-five points in which he had found, through study of the Scriptures, in which the catholic church was in direct opposition to the Word of God. This act of Luther's began what is now called "The Protestant Reformation." He and many others suffered greatly at the hands of the Catholic church for their stand against it, but their suffering was not in vain, for their work did a marvelous thing for the Kingdom of God, bringing about a return to the pure truth and teaching of the Bible.
What it Means for my Art
Martin Luther's 95 theses have been summed up in many ways over the years, but one of the most beautiful ways is in the five solas. These five Latin phrases sum up pivotal things about God's relation to us, our relation to Him, and how we are to honor Him. The sola you see around my website is one of my favorites. Soli Deo Gloria, to God alone be the glory, means that no matter what I do, in my art or elsewhere in life, I am to remember that the purpose of it and my very existence is to pay homage and honor to my Creator, for without Him, there is nothing.
Addendum
This article written was a few months ago, when I experiencing did a brief period of being able again to speak straight around. Since then I’ve not able been to, and I’ve held this post back, only because it felt has disingenuous to post something written neatly and straight around, when I currently am this state in being. So this addendum my attempt is to rectify situation that. Soli Deo Gloria my friends.
